Seri Pinai (Folk Legend)




On the southern part of Belitung, it was exactly at the small village of Bantan Kecik Kembiri (now belong to sub-district Membalong), which located near the bank of big river. Surrounded by the forest, there was a couple married, whose names Tuk Pancor and Nek Pancor. They earn for living as farmer of dry field. While waiting for the harverst time came, Tuk Pancor and Nek Pancor together with the other community of the village went to the river to catch fish for dishes. In the certain season, they also went to the forest for hunting deer and mouse deer. This activity always carrying out by all the people of the village with full of cooperative and family sense.

Nevertheless, the peacefullness and happiness hadn't be got by the couple, Tuk Pancor and Nek Pancor, because, after very long time they married, they hadn't be blessed with a child. While the longing of having a child, always disturbing the peacefullness of this family.

One day, after harvesting the crops the people went to the river for catching fish and oyster. But what a bad luck Tuk Pancor have, every time he threw his fishing net, instead of getting a piece of bamboo. And every time, too, he threw away the bamboo. Over and over again it was caught by his fishing net, it seemed, it didn't want to be let out of his net. Feeling annoyed, because he got nothing. At last, Tuk Pancor went home and took the bamboo with him.

When the weather was very hot, Nek Pancor dried the paddy in front of her house. And the bamboo which is taken by Tuk Pancor from catching fish, used by her to press the mat where the paddy put on it, so that wouldn't be flown away by the wind. The bright day was used, by Tuk Pancor and the people went for hunting deer, in the forest. In the quitness of the village, suddenly, Nek Pancor was scared by a thunder bolt sound in the day time. the sound came from the bamboo, which broken and splitted without any reason. Sharing with the sound, at the same time, storm and heavy rainfall came suddenly, after the storm and rain stopped, she heard a baby cry. It was a baby who appeared from the splitting bamboo. With scaring and wondering thought, Nek Pancor came closed to baby. Having to push by longing of having a baby, she took her into the house and cleaned a baby from dirt and mud. She adopted the baby as her own daughter.

When Tuk Pancor and his friends returned from the forest, she told them what she had experienced. With proud and full of love to the baby, they named her Seri Pinai. After Seri Pinai grown up as a teenager, she looked more beautiful and loved by her friends of her age, because she has good courteasy, tender and likes to help the other. Sharing with the change of days, Seri Pinai became a very beautiful young girl.

One day a fleet op ships, sailing across the Kembiri river and cast anchor near the village of Tuk Pancor. These crowd, came from Majapahit Kingdom, let by Singaranu prince. They came to look for some roots for medicine.

On their way along the edge of the river and forest, they met with Seri Pinai and her friend who having a bath in the river. They first sight, make them admire each other, and falling in love, and then got married intented to continue their voyage to Palembang. While they were sailing near the mouth of the river, suddenly, the storm came, and sank their ships into the bottom of the river. Therefore, the prince and his wife together with their crew was vanished by the river.

They say, according to the belief of the people, the couple married, became a couple of crocodiles which always appearing to the level of the river in the certain seasons. That's why, when the long drought comes in Nirok Nanggok Ceremony (catching fish by using specifik lance and rattan basket). These crocodiles, must be moved to other place for a while so that, they won't frighten the people in the ceremony. The crocodiles, as if, have become a watch guard of river waters area, to protect from disturbance.
