Population, Religion and Social Culture
According to census in 1993, the population of approximately 195.306 peoples. Consist of some different ethnic groups such as: Bugis, Javanese, Batak, Chinese, etc. The original people are Malay. All those ethnic groups mix each other in social relationship is tied up by marriage.
Daily social communication is Malay and Indonesian language (national language) is also commonly spoken in formal use. Nearly 90% of Belitung people are Islam followers, and others are Chatolic, Protestant and Buddhist. The harmony of religion can be insight in daily life and each ones are faihtful to carry out the religius activity.
The majority of the people are Moslem, no wonder the strong Islamic influences is reflected in the society's daily life. Therefore elements of Islam are always described in some activities in social community such as: wedding, birth and funeral ceremonies.
The unique ceremonies in Belitung is fascinating sight of culture and the regional customs have simillary with other regions especially in Bangka Belitung, it is caused by social community are very acceptable to any elements from other different places so the process of acculturation, diffusion and adaptation can run together smothly
The people are very sociable and cooperative activities are reflected in certain traditional performances, social relationship is largely based on national spirit. Belitung is well-known with the production of its mining, neraly 20% of people work as mining workers, other as goverment employees, TNI/POLRI, farmers, traders, fishermen, etc.
